A Nobel Prize-winning economist has warned students not to rush into STEM to get jobs in AI, saying they could sow their “own seeds of self-destruction.”

Students are scrambling to study STEM at universities in the hope of landing lucrative and exciting jobs in the artificial intelligence industry, but a Nobel Prize-winning economist has warned against hype.

Christopher Pissarides, an economics professor at the London School of Economics and winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, told Bloomberg in a recent interview that workers in IT jobs that are advancing AI risk having their own roles become obsolete in the future. .

“The skills needed now – collecting data, collating it, developing it and using it to develop the next phase of AI or, rather, making AI more applicable for jobs – will make the skills needed now become obsolete because it will do the job,” Pissarides said.

He added: “The demand for new computing skills contains its own seeds of self-destruction.”

Applications to study computing at universities increased by almost 10% in the UK in 2023 due to interest in AI, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, according to the BBC. There was a 16% increase in applications to study software engineering and an 11% increase in applications for computer science compared to 2022.

However, Pissarides explained that there may not even be enough AI jobs for all graduates.

“Even though you see growth, they are still not as numerous as might be required to have jobs for all the graduates who come out with STEM because that’s what they want to do,” he said.

Instead, Pissarides noted that soft skills like communication and empathy in industries like hospitality and healthcare will likely thrive in the future because they are unlikely to be adopted by AI.

“When you say that most jobs will involve self-care, communication and good social relationships, people might say ‘Oh, God, that’s what we have to look forward to in the future,'” Pissarides said.

“We shouldn’t look down on these jobs. They’re better than the jobs school dropouts used to do.”

The hype around AI is partly influenced by the high salaries that companies are handing out. Big tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI are doling out six-figure salaries for AI positions, Business Insider previously reported.

But even non-tech companies like Disney, JPMorgan and Accenture are offering competitive salaries to workers with AI skills and knowledge, BI reported.

In the United States, there has been an overall increase in STEM graduates since 2010, according to the Pew Research Center, especially because technology positions are some of the highest paying in the United States.

The announcement of the restructuring of the advertising sales unit was delivered internally by Sean Downey, president of Google for the Americas and Global Partners, in a meeting held last week. However, key details about whether this reorganization will result in additional job cuts have yet to be revealed.
